Issued to mark the nine-hundredth anniversary of the University of Bologna — commonly cited as the oldest university in continuous operation in the Western world, founded around 1088. The Italian state mint produced this as part of a broader commemorative program that expanded significantly through the 1980s, a decade when the Istituto Poligrafico issued more commemorative silver lire than in any previous period.
