Obverse description Central field features the papal heraldic shield of the Camerlengo, surmounted by the umbraculum (pavilion) and flanked by the crossed keys of Saint Peter with pendant tasseled cords — the traditional emblems displayed during a Sede Vacante period. The engraver's signature N. MORELLI appears vertically along the lower left field. The circumferential legend reads SEDE VACANTE in the upper arc and SEPTEMBER MCMLXXVIII in the lower arc, denoting the specific vacancy of September 1978 following the death of Pope John Paul I.
