Reverse description The bronzital centre presents a detailed high-relief depiction of the Cesta (Second Tower), the medieval fortified tower perched atop a rugged rocky promontory on Monte Titano, with crenellated walls and ancillary fortifications extending across the outcrop. The mint mark R (Rome Mint) appears in the lower left of the inner field. The acmonital outer ring bears the date 1988 at the top, interrupted by stylised battlements, and the denomination L. 500 prominently displayed along the lower arc of the ring.

Additional information

San Marino's bimetallic 500 lire program began in 1982, several years ahead of Italy's own adoption of the format for its workhorse 500 lire coin — a quiet reversal of the usual dynamic between the microstate and its much larger neighbor. The 1988 issue falls within an annual series in which San Marino rotated themes across different subjects each year, a practice that made the republic's coinage more a collector subscription than a circulating currency.

Actual circulation within San Marino was negligible. These pieces were effectively withdrawn at the border.
