Issued to commemorate the centenary of Giovanni Bosco's death, this coin appeared the same year the Vatican canonization anniversaries were pulling commemorative silver production across Italian state and ecclesiastical mints alike. Bosco, who founded the Salesians of Don Bosco in 1859 to educate impoverished youth in Turin, was canonized by Pius XI in 1934. The Italian state's decision to honor him through a circulating commemorative — rather than a purely collector piece — reflected his unusually broad popular standing outside strictly Catholic demographics.
The .835 fineness places it in the older Italian silver tradition, below sterling, a specification carried over from pre-republican coinage standards.
