By 1984, the Vatican's shift to bimetallic coinage was still relatively recent — Italy had introduced the format with its own 500 lire in 1982, and the Holy See followed closely, adopting the same physical specification to maintain compatibility with Italian circulation. John Paul II's pontificate produced an unusually high volume of distinct annual coin types, partly because the Vatican issues new circulation sets each year tied to the reigning pope, meaning every year of a long papacy generates its own discrete numismatic entry. His 27-year reign makes the 1984 issues easy to undervalue simply because there are so many of them.
