The denomination L.500 appears prominently to the right of centre, with the mint mark R to the upper left and the engraver's signature L. DE SIMONI at the lower left. Italy's 1999 commemorative marks the fourth direct election to the European Parliament — the first held after the euro's January introduction, which made the bimetallic 500 lire series itself an anachronism already in its final months. Circulation coinage in lire would cease entirely in 2002.
