| Reverse description | The bronzital centre depicts two stylised ballot boxes arranged diagonally, the upper one shown open with European stars emerging from its slot, and the lower one bearing a circle of twelve stars — the emblem of the European Union — flanked by the dates 1979 and 1999 marking the twentieth anniversary of direct European Parliament elections. The denomination L.500 appears prominently to the right of centre, with the mint mark R to the upper left and the engraver's signature L. DE SIMONI at the lower left. The date 13 GIUGNO (13 June) is inscribed below, indicating the election date. The acmonital outer ring carries the circumferential legend ELEZIONI DEL PARLAMENTO EUROPEO, interspersed with five-pointed stars at the upper arc. |

| Additional information |
Italy's 1999 commemorative marks the fourth direct election to the European Parliament — the first held after the euro's January introduction, which made the bimetallic 500 lire series itself an anachronism already in its final months. Circulation coinage in lire would cease entirely in 2002.
