The Sovereign Military Order of Malta holds a unique position in international law — a sovereign entity without territory, recognized by over 100 states, yet occupying only a few buildings in Rome. That anomaly makes its coinage legally issued but practically uncirculated by design, produced almost exclusively for the numismatic market. The Order began issuing coins in earnest in the 1970s, with face values denominated in Scudi and Liras carrying no relation to any circulating economy.
The Poseidon series from this period drew on classical Maltese and Mediterranean heritage, though the Greek deity has no particular historical connection to the Order's crusader origins.
