| Obverse description | Central device comprises the emblem of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta: an eight-pointed Maltese Cross displayed within a circular medallion, surmounted by a sovereign crown, and flanked by a wreath of laurel branches. Crossed swords appear below the central device, with a ribbon banner inscribed KNIGHTS OF MALTA overlying them. The denomination 500 LIRAS is split across the lower field, with the initials O.S.J. and the date 2001 appearing in the lower portion. The legend SOVRANO OSPEDALIERO ORDINE DI MALTA curves along the upper periphery. |
