Honduras introduced the 500 Lempira denomination relatively late in its modern series, and it remains the highest-denomination note in regular circulation. The Banco Central has periodically updated the security specification on high-value notes in response to counterfeiting pressure concentrated in the 100 and 200 Lempira range — the 500 benefited from those upgrades without being the primary target.
