| Obverse description | The obverse depicts the domed rotunda of an astronomical observatory occupying the left half of the field, set against a darkened sky representing the eclipse. In the upper right, the partially eclipsed sun with a corona of solar flares is rendered in fine relief. To the right of the observatory, the Romanian state coat of arms — featuring the eagle displayed with shield on breast — appears within a rectangular frame. The denomination '500 LEI' is inscribed horizontally across the centre-right of the field, with the legend 'ROMANIA' prominently displayed in the lower field and the date '1999' in the exergue. |

Romania experienced a total solar eclipse on August 11, 1999 — one of the last of the millennium and widely visible across Europe. The National Bank issued both a circulating commemorative and this aluminium pattern to mark the event. Patterns of this type were produced in extremely limited numbers for internal review and are rarely encountered outside institutional collections.
