Issued as part of Romania's ongoing fine gold commemorative program, this piece marks the 300th anniversary of the Colțea Church and Hospital complex in Bucharest, founded by spătar Mihai Cantacuzino around 1701–1702. The hospital attached to it was the first of its kind in Wallachia. The complex was heavily damaged in the 1802 earthquake and subsequently rebuilt in reduced form — the original tower collapsed and was not reconstructed until the late 19th century.
Mintage was limited to 500 pieces.
