The printed date of 30 April 1945 marks the day Germany's forces in Norway began their collapse — Hitler had died the previous day, and the German occupation that had run since April 1940 was effectively over. Norges Bank, which had operated under severe constraints throughout the occupation, was preparing to reassert control of the monetary system almost immediately. This note's date connects it directly to that transition moment, though the 2018 physical issue places it firmly in the modern polymer-adjacent cotton series.
P#56 belongs to Norges Bank's "Coastal" thematic series, designed by Metric Design and Snøhetta — an unusually open competition process for a central bank.
