Additional information

The Taj Mahal was built between roughly 1632 and 1648 under Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth. An estimated 20,000 workers and craftsmen were drawn from across Central Asia and India for its construction. Laos has no historical connection to the monument — this is a bullion-adjacent commemorative struck for the collector export market, a category in which the Bank of the Lao PDR has been an active participant since the 1990s, licensing foreign landmarks and themes to generate hard currency revenue.
