Introduced in 2024 as Ukraine's first new banknote denomination since the full-scale Russian invasion of February 2022, this 500 hryvnia note carries the phrase "Slava Ukraini" — Glory to Ukraine — as an explicit statement of national defiance during active wartime. The decision to issue a new high-denomination note while the country remains under sustained military attack is itself unusual in modern central banking; most wartime economies defer such projects entirely.
Printed domestically at the NBU's own facility in Kyiv, a city that had been under missile attack repeatedly in the preceding two years.
