Ukraine's 500 hryvnia denomination has historically been the highest-value note in regular circulation for much of the post-independence period, making it a workhorse of large transactions rather than a curiosity. The series spanning 2006 to 2015 reflects a decade in which Ukraine cycled through severe economic turbulence — the 2008–2009 financial crisis hit the hryvnia hard, with the currency losing roughly 60% of its value against the dollar, sharply eroding the real purchasing power this denomination was meant to carry.

Cotton substrate and a security thread are the primary anti-counterfeiting measures — modest by contemporary European standards, which drew periodic criticism from Ukrainian banking oversight bodies during the series' run.
