Anthony Nesty's 50-meter butterfly victory at the Seoul Olympics was one of the most unexpected results of the 1988 Games — a swimmer from a country with no Olympic-size pool defeating Matt Biondi, the American world record holder, by a single hundredth of a second. Suriname had never won an Olympic gold medal before. The win triggered a national celebration, and this issue followed almost immediately as a commemorative response.
Nesty remains the only Olympic swimming medalist ever produced by Suriname.
