Issued to mark the 1970 International Exposition of Haitian Art, these were among several large-format gold pieces commissioned under François Duvalier — a regime that made aggressive use of commemorative coinage as a vehicle for foreign currency extraction rather than domestic circulation. Almost none entered commerce within Haiti itself.
The .585 fineness is notably below the .900 gold standard common to most prestige issues of the period, a choice that reduced metal cost while maintaining an imposing physical presence. Fr#6 in the Friedberg catalog places it firmly within the modern commemorative classification, where melt value and issue price diverged sharply at point of sale.
