The Banka e Shtetit Shqiptar — the Albanian State Bank — was established in 1945 under the new communist government that consolidated power after the German withdrawal. This 500 Franga issue is one of the first notes of that institution, printed by the Reichsdruckerei in Berlin, which by 1945 had been operating under Soviet-occupied East Berlin and would soon be reorganized as the Bundesdruckerei. The logistics of sourcing printing from a press in a divided, devastated city in the immediate postwar period make the production of this series a minor curiosity in itself.

The franga as a currency unit was abolished shortly after — Albania adopted the lek as its sole denomination in 1947, rendering this issue obsolete within two years of printing.
