| Obverse description | Three-quarter facing portrait of Jean de la Fontaine, the celebrated French fabulist, depicted with his characteristic long, flowing curled hair and period collar, rendered in high relief against a polished field. The portrait is engraved in a bold baroque style, capturing the likeness of the poet with fine detail in the facial features and hair treatment. The arc legend REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE curves along the upper periphery, while the dates 1695 and 1995 flank the lower portion of the portrait on either side, commemorating the tercentenary of La Fontaine's death.
