Additional information

The "Map of France" subject is peculiar for a Cameroonian issue — France ceded formal control of its UN trust territory in 1960, the same year the issuer designation on these coins begins. Cameroon uses the CFA franc, a currency still pegged to the euro and managed through the Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale, with France holding a guaranteed convertibility role. The political irony of a Cameroonian coin commemorating French geography is not incidental.

These gold-plated copper-nickel pieces are produced for the collector market, not circulation. The issuing authority contracts production to private mints in Europe; the coins never see Yaoundé.
