The Bank of Central African States issues commemorative silver under the franc CFA system shared by six nations — Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon — none of which have any institutional connection to the subject matter here. Messier 100 is a grand design spiral galaxy in the Virgo Cluster, roughly 55 million light-years distant, first observed by Pierre Méchain in 1781. It was among the earliest targets of the repaired Hubble Space Telescope in 1994, providing the first sharp proof that the servicing mission had succeeded.
