The Ivory Coast has no meaningful historical connection to the Space Shuttle program, which is precisely the point — these BCEAO-framework commemoratives were licensed vanity issues produced for the international collector market, not for domestic circulation. Côte d'Ivoire's franc CFA zone membership gave it the legal mechanism to issue commemorative coinage, and private minting firms exploited that window aggressively in the late 2000s.
KM#52 is one of dozens of such issues from this period bearing Ivorian authority but minted entirely abroad for export.
