Reverse description The entire reverse field is rendered in full colour, depicting a naturalistic meadow scene with lush green foliage and wildflowers in soft bokeh focus as background. Dominating the centre-left of the design is a raised silver magnifying glass motif, the lens of which frames a vivid, realistically coloured specimen of the Callicore hesperis butterfly, displayed with wings spread, exhibiting characteristic iridescent blue hindwings and bold crimson-pink forewing bands against dark brown-black margins. The magnifying glass handle extends to the right in relief, rendered in polished silver against the coloured field. The scientific name Callicore hesperis appears in white lettering along the upper interior of the reverse field, arching above the magnifying glass.

Additional information

Callicore hesperis is a South American nymphalid butterfly — which makes its appearance on a Central African franc coin an odd geographical pairing. These Cameroonian silver issues are struck under license through the BEAC framework but produced entirely for the collector market by European minting houses; they bear no relation to circulating CFA currency and will never see Douala.
