This 500 Francs note belongs to the series issued under French administration following the Allied landings in North Africa in November 1942. The Bank of Algeria, nominally a private institution with a state concession, continued operating through the Vichy transition and into the Free French period — the 1944 dating places this note firmly in the latter phase, when Algiers briefly functioned as the capital of liberated France before Paris fell to the Allies in August of that year.
Printing was handled by the Banque de France, which had relocated key production capacity out of occupied Paris. Romagnoli, an Italian-born engraver who built his career within the French state printing apparatus, executed the intaglio work with the precision that defines his known output for the Banque de France series of this period.
