Rwanda's first post-independence banknote series was issued by the Banque Nationale du Rwanda following its establishment in 1964, but this 1974 dated 500 Francs belongs to a later printing cycle, when the country was still heavily reliant on external security printers for all its paper currency needs. Thomas De La Rue had supplied Rwanda from the beginning of the series, and P#11 continues that relationship without interruption.
Watermark security is the sole anti-counterfeiting measure — no security thread, no fluorescent inks. By mid-1970s standards, a modest specification, though not unusual for lower-denomination African issues of the period.
