The Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale — the common central bank for the six BEAC member states — issued separate national series for each country despite sharing a currency zone and a common printer. This Congolese 500 Francs belongs to a transitional period during which the Congo-Brazzaville government styled itself a People's Republic, a designation it held from 1970 until 1991. Three signature combinations across a decade-long print run reflect turnover in both the BEAC governorship and the national finance ministry during a period of considerable political instability in Brazzaville.
