The ECB formally discontinued issuance of the €500 note in April 2019, citing its use in money laundering and illicit cash transactions — a conclusion drawn partly from research showing that high-denomination notes circulate far less than lower ones, suggesting storage rather than everyday use. Notes already in circulation remain legal tender indefinitely, but no new ones have entered distribution since that cutoff.
A 2023-dated €500 on paper at 64 × 32 mm does not correspond to any issued Europa Series or First Series note. The dimensions alone are inconsistent with the actual note.
