Obverse description Central design features an armillary sphere overlaid with the Cross of the Order of Christ, rendered in a stylised Renaissance manner evoking the Portuguese Age of Discovery. The sphere's intersecting bands and the cross form an interlocking geometric composition at the centre of the field. The denomination 500$00 appears in the lower field, flanked by the date 1983 at mid-centre. The legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA arcs along the upper rim, while DESCOBRIMENTOS RENASCIMENTO curves along the lower rim. The INCM mint mark appears in small letters to the lower right of the central motif, and a beaded border runs along the entire periphery.

Reverse description Central design depicts a large medieval fortified castle with three towers and multiple arched openings, rendered in a flat, stylised manner reminiscent of medieval illuminated manuscript art. The castle occupies most of the field and is set against a dark background. Along the upper rim, a curved inscription in Gothic-style lettering arcs within a beaded inner border. A beaded outer border frames the entire design. The composition references the historical and artistic themes of the XVII Council of Europe Art Exhibition, evoking Portugal's medieval architectural heritage.
