Lisbon held the European Capital of Culture designation in 1994, but Portugal issued commemorative coinage across multiple years to mark the broader program. By 2001, the series had expanded to acknowledge Oporto's own Capital of Culture year — the only time two cities from the same country held the designation simultaneously, sharing the honor with Rotterdam.
The Gomes reference places this among the later strikes in the R 150 type sequence, indicating this gold rendition followed earlier base-metal issues of the same design.
