Cape Verde abandoned the escudo as legal tender in 1999 when it pegged its currency to the euro under a fixed exchange rate agreement with Portugal, yet the Banco de Cabo Verde has continued issuing escudo-denominated collector coins ever since. A 2025 bimetallic issue in this denomination is almost certainly a numismatic release with no circulation mandate — the escudo exists today as a monetary unit on paper and in the catalog, not in anyone's pocket.
