| Obverse description | The obverse presents a modernist graphic composition against a finely line-engraved background field divided by diagonal hatching. At center, the stylized coat of arms of Portugal — featuring the traditional escutcheon with five bezants — is superimposed on a representation of an armillary sphere rendered in bold relief. The denomination '500' appears prominently in the lower central field, with 'ESC.' indicated below. The legend 'REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA' runs vertically along the left border, and 'PORTUGUESA' continues along the right; the mint mark 'INCM' appears at lower right. |

This proof piece was issued as part of Portugal's ongoing commemorative program during the mid-1990s, a period when the country was accelerating its alignment with European monetary union ahead of the euro's introduction in 1999. The Banco de Portugal used the 500 escudo denomination heavily for silver commemoratives throughout this decade, knowing the escudo itself had a fixed expiration date.
