Bradbury Wilkinson held Banco de Portugal's higher-denomination business through much of the interwar period, and this 500 Escudos was among their more substantial commissions. The escudo had only replaced the real in 1911, and by the early 1920s inflation was eroding confidence in Portuguese paper badly enough that high-value notes like this circulated hard and returned to banks in poor condition — worn examples are the rule, not the exception.
P#129 distinguishes the first print from later runs by plate characteristics rather than any printed notation on the note itself.
