Additional information

Greece hosted the 1982 European Athletics Championships in Athens — the first time the city had held the event — making this a domestically significant issue beyond the routine commemorative cycle. The Games returned athletics to a city that had staged the inaugural modern Olympics in 1896, a connection the Greek government was keen to press in its official communications surrounding the release.

Struck at a moment when Greek silver commemoratives were being actively marketed to foreign collectors through the newly established Hellenic Mint export program, many examples went straight into presentation cases and never circulated.
