Singapore's Lunar New Year gold series launched in 1976 with the Year of the Dragon and ran through one complete twelve-year cycle, making the 1983 Pig the penultimate issue before the series concluded. The Singapore Mint produced these in relatively modest numbers compared to contemporary Hong Kong and Chinese issues, and regional demand — particularly from collectors in Malaysia and Indonesia — absorbed much of the mintage domestically.
The .916 fineness follows the traditional 22-karat standard inherited from British colonial coinage practice in the Straits Settlements.
