Obverse description Brown intaglio print on a guilloche underprint. The bank's bilingual title in English and Chinese (香港上海匯豐銀行) runs across the top, with the colonial coat of arms at left and the denomination in words centred slightly off-axis. A watermark window at right incorporates two concealed Chinese characters reading 'five hundred', while the serial number and facsimile signatures of the Chief Accountant and General Manager appear in the lower field.
