This issue is part of a Cook Islands platinum series commemorating Magellan's 1519–1522 circumnavigation — the first voyage to circle the globe, completed under Elcano after Magellan himself was killed in the Philippines in April 1521. Cook Islands, a self-governing territory in free association with New Zealand, issued numerous high-denomination precious metal pieces through the 1990s aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation, with many produced in extremely limited quantities by overseas contract mints.
Fr#76 places this in Friedberg's gold and platinum coin reference, a useful provenance anchor given how thinly documented some of these Pacific island platinum issues remain.
