The Super Pit — formally the Fimiston Open Cut — sits on the edge of Kalgoorlie, where the Golden Mile lode was first struck in 1893. At its peak the mine was producing roughly 850,000 ounces of gold annually, making it one of the most productive open-cut gold operations on earth. Perth Mint draws its bullion supply partly from this region, lending this particular issue a documentary logic beyond the usual commemorative rationale.
The 5oz format at .9999 fineness reflects Perth Mint's push in the late 2010s toward large-denomination collector-bullion hybrids aimed squarely at Asian markets, where provenance and purity certification carry significant commercial weight.
