Obverse description High-relief effigy of King Charles III facing left, rendered in fine detail with naturalistic portraiture showing the king in civilian dress with suit and tie. This first official portrait of Charles III for Australian coinage was engraved by Dan Thorne, whose initials 'DT' appear at the lower right of the bust truncation. The legend 'CHARLES III' arcs along the upper left field and 'AUSTRALIA' along the upper right, separated by a raised dot, with the denomination '500 DOLLARS' inscribed in large letters along the lower periphery. The frosted high-relief effigy contrasts sharply against the deeply mirrored proof field.
