American Express shifted production of its higher-denomination travelers cheques to De La Rue during a period when the travelers cheque business was already in structural decline — card networks had been eating into the product's relevance since the 1990s. The $500 face value was always a niche issue, used primarily by travelers moving large sums without wanting multiple instruments, and redemption volumes for this denomination were consistently low compared to the $50 and $100 issues.

De La Rue's security package here reflects mid-2000s commercial document standards rather than currency-grade specification. The hologram in particular is a relatively modest foil strip application.
