The Province of Canada ceased to exist the following year — Confederation in 1867 dissolved it into the new Dominion — which means this note was issued right at the end of an administrative entity, not the beginning of one. The British American Bank Note Company had only been incorporated in 1866 itself, making this among the earliest work produced under that name, formed from the merger of two predecessor firms operating out of Montreal and Ottawa.
At $500, this was not a note that moved through ordinary hands. Denominations at this level served interbank settlement and large commercial transactions. Surviving examples are exceptionally rare for obvious reasons: few were printed, fewer circulated, and almost none escaped eventual destruction by redemption.
