Umm Al Qaiwain issued this coin in 1970 as part of a wave of wildlife conservation-themed silver pieces produced by several Trucial States in the years immediately before federation. The timing was deliberate — with UAE unification approaching in 1971, individual rulers had a narrow window to issue independent coinage under their own authority, and many did so with series aimed squarely at the international collector market rather than domestic circulation.
Ahmad II bin Rashid Al Mu'alla ruled Umm Al Qaiwain from 1929 until his death in 1981, making him one of the longest-serving Trucial rulers. After federation, UAQ-issued pieces from this period became curiosities — technically pre-UAE issues from an emirate too small to have ever operated a meaningful monetary system of its own.
