The 1993 series was the UAE's third definitive issue and consolidated the Central Bank's authority after the earlier Currency Board notes of the 1970s. At 500 dirhams, this was the highest denomination in general circulation — the 1000-dirham note would not appear until the following series. Thomas De La Rue handled the entire run, as they had for the preceding issue, maintaining continuity in printing quality through a period when Gulf state currencies were under considerable pressure from regional instability following the 1990–91 Gulf War.
The security thread on this denomination is a simple metallic type without the windowed or demetallized features De La Rue would introduce on later UAE issues.
