Obverse description The obverse features two conjoined rectangular panels set within a raised inner circle against a recessed field. The left panel displays the official emblem of the XIV Sarajevo Winter Olympics — the five Olympic rings above a stylised snowflake motif — while the right panel bears the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia state coat of arms, comprising a torch flame encircled by wheat sheaves and a five-pointed star above. A mint mark appears at the upper centre alongside the date 1982 in a rectangular cartouche. The denomination Д 500 D, rendered in both Cyrillic and Latin characters, is prominently displayed in the lower field. The surrounding legend reads СФР ЈУГОСЛАВИЈА SFR JUGOSLAVIJA, in Cyrillic and Latin script respectively, arcing around the full circumference of the coin.

Reverse description The reverse presents a dynamic high-relief depiction of a downhill skier in a pronounced aerodynamic tuck position, occupying the central field within a raised inner circle. The athlete, rendered with fine detail showing helmet, goggles, racing suit, and ski poles angled close to the body, conveys speed and athletic precision. The surrounding legend, arcing along the upper periphery, reads XIV ZIMSKE OLIMPIJSKE IGRE in Latin script, while SARAJEVO '84 appears along the lower register, completing the commemorative inscription for the XIV Winter Olympic Games held in Sarajevo.

Additional information

Yugoslavia secured the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo in 1977, beating out Sapporo and Gothenburg in a vote that surprised many IOC members. It was the first Winter Games held in a socialist country, and the Yugoslav government treated the event as a major prestige project — the commemorative coin program, issued two years before the Games, was part of a coordinated campaign to generate hard currency from foreign collectors at a time when Yugoslavia's external debt was becoming a serious structural problem.
