Reverse description Two Eohippus (dawn horse) specimens, the prehistoric ancestor of the modern horse, are depicted in dynamic profile trotting to the right across a stylized ground line rendered in fine relief. The animals display characteristic short stature and multi-toed feet, faithfully rendered with engraved surface detail suggesting fur texture. The species name EOHIPPUS appears in small capitals in the right field. The legend PRESERVE PLANET EARTH arcs around the upper and lateral periphery, while the denomination D500 is inscribed at the base of the design.

Additional information

Bosnia issued this coin while the siege of Sarajevo was entering its third year — the city remained under blockade, and the country's monetary system was being rebuilt almost entirely from scratch. The National Bank had only been established in 1992, and early issues like this one were as much declarations of institutional existence as they were functional currency.

The choice of the Eohippus, an early ancestor of the modern horse, was part of a broader series featuring prehistoric fauna with ties to Balkan paleontological finds.
