Costa Rica's 500 colones bimetallic type has been in production since 2003, making this colorized 2023 issue a late-run variant of a long-circulating workhorse denomination. Colorized collector strikes of circulating bimetallic coins occupy an awkward commercial space — neither a true circulation issue nor a purpose-struck commemorative — and Banco Central de Costa Rica has produced several such pieces aimed squarely at the souvenir and collector export market rather than domestic use.
KM#242.1 distinguishes this colorized variant from the standard circulation strike logged under the parent type.
