Reverse description The reverse depicts a coloured globe rendered in the silver inner disc, upon which is superimposed a coloured green relief map of Costa Rica's mainland territory. A small inset cartouche in the lower left of the globe represents Isla del Coco (Cocos Island). At the top of the inner disc, a coloured torch with an orange flame rises above the globe. The inscriptions 'LIBERTAD', 'PAZ', and 'DEMOCRACIA' appear in the lower field of the inner disc. The outer ring bears the commemorative legend '200 AÑOS DE INDEPENDENCIA' arcing around the upper portion, with the date span '1821 - 2021' displayed prominently at the base, all against a black enamel-toned background.

Additional information

Costa Rica's bicentenary fell on September 15, 2021 — exactly 200 years after the Act of Independence of Central America was signed in Guatemala City, a document that dissolved the region's ties to Spain without a single shot fired on Costa Rican soil. The country had no independence war, no founding battle; the news arrived by courier nearly a month after the fact.

The colored variant of this issue was produced for the collector market alongside the standard circulation strike, a distinction captured in the KM suffix.
