Comments

J.A. Moisan, operating on rue Saint-Jean in Quebec City, claims the title of oldest grocery store in North America — continuously trading since 1871. This note is a store scrip issued in 2012, almost certainly as a commemorative or gift certificate rather than emergency currency, produced by J.B. Deschamps Inc., a Quebec commercial printer with a long history of specialty and security printing work.

Scrip of this kind occupies an awkward taxonomic space — too purposeful to be ephemera, too local to be mainstream numismatic material. Deschamps printed it on paper, not polymer, which limits its longevity as a circulating instrument.
