| Obverse description | The central field displays the coat of arms of Rwanda, featuring a shield decorated with a traditional woven pattern, flanked by a sorghum stalk to the left and a coffee branch to the right, with a sun and a traditional basket above the shield. The arms are supported by two interlocked rings beneath the shield, all within a circular border. Rwanda's commemorative bullion program, administered through partnerships with European minting houses (primarily Czech and Slovak), produced a run of lunar-themed issues in the early 2010s aimed squarely at the Asian collector market. The Czech pavé gemstone inlay technique used here was developed specifically for this class of collector coin and requires secondary setting work after the primary strike — the stones are not struck in place.
The National Bank of Rwanda has functioned as an issuing authority of convenience for such pieces since the mid-2000s, lending legal tender status to coins with no practical circulation intent.
