| Reverse description | Three athletes in full stride are depicted in high relief across the central field, representing track runners competing at the Atlanta Games. Behind them, a classical Greek temple with prominent columns fills the background, referencing the ancient Olympic origins in Athens. The commemorative legend FROM ATHENS TO ATLANTA arcs along the upper periphery, with the Olympic year 1996 positioned below the temple in the mid-field and the issue year 1995 appearing in the lower exergual area beneath the runners. |

| Additional information |
Afghanistan issued this piece in 1995 under the Rabbani government, at a moment when Kabul was actively being shelled and the Taliban were advancing on the capital. The Olympics sponsorship was a revenue arrangement brokered through a foreign licensing intermediary — the Afghan state had no meaningful participation in the Atlanta Games and no functional mint infrastructure of its own. These were struck abroad and sold into the collector market.
