The 500,000-rouble note was a direct consequence of Russia's hyperinflationary spiral in the early 1990s, during which the rouble lost the overwhelming majority of its purchasing power. By 1995, denominations that would have been unimaginable a decade earlier were routine. This note represented roughly $100 USD at mid-1995 exchange rates — a figure that continued to slide.
The 1997 redenomination made it obsolete almost immediately: one new rouble replaced one thousand old ones, rendering the 500,000 worth fifty kopeks on paper.
